Abdulaziz Ahmed, M.D., is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in advanced shoulder and elbow reconstruction, and sports medicine. His practice focuses on the treatment of shoulder, elbow, and select sports-related conditions, including rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthritis, failed prior shoulder surgery, shoulder instability, complex fractures, elbow arthritis, elbow instability, ulnar collateral ligament injuries, and athletic injuries involving the knee such as anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus tears. Dr. Ahmed has specialized expertise in shoulder replacement, elbow replacement, revision replacement, rotator cuff repair, tendon transfers, shoulder stabilization, fracture reconstruction, elbow ligament reconstruction (such as Tommy John surgery), elbow arthroscopy and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. He has an avid interest in open and arthroscopic tendon transfers of the shoulder, shoulder and elbow complex reconstructions after failed surgery or significant bone loss, arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques for nerve decompression including the brachial plexus and around the shoulder blade, and tendon transfers or fusion for scapular winging. Dr. Ahmed earned his medical degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology and was later conferred his M.D. from the University of the State of New York in Albany. He completed his ACGME-I accredited orthopaedic surgery residency at Hamad General Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Doha, Qatar. Dr. Ahmed is triple fellowship-trained in shoulder and elbow surgery and sports medicine. Dr. Ahmed first completed a shoulder surgery fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with Drs. Edward McFarland and Uma Srikumaran. He then completed a complex shoulder and elbow fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, training with Drs. Jon JP Warner and Bassem Elhassan and focusing on advanced treatments for complex shoulder and scapular conditions. He concluded his training with a shoulder surgery and sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver/Boulder, where he treated athletes from recreational to professional levels. During his time in Colorado, he served as an assistant team physician for multiple professional sports teams, including the Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Mammoth (NLL) and Colorado Rapids (MLS). He was also the assistant team physician for the Colorado Buffaloes college football team. Dr. Ahmed has co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, and has presented his work nationally and internationally on topics such as shoulder arthroplasty, instability and tendon transfer techniques. His research focuses on improving outcomes in shoulder surgeries, such as shoulder replacement and rotator cuff repair, and involves performing biomechanical studies to refine surgical techniques. He holds several research and leadership positions in leading sports medicine organizations as well as editorial positions in prominent orthopaedic journals. Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Ahmed is dedicated to educating and mentoring early-career orthopaedic clinicians. In his free time, Dr. Ahmed enjoys traveling and staying active by working out, and playing golf and tennis. He is also an avid fan of soccer and F1 racing.
